Published to coincide with John Pilger’s television documentary Death of a Nation: The Timor Conspiracy, the centrepiece of ‘Distant Voices’ is East Timor, which Pilger entered secretly in 1993 to expose the death of a third of the population as a result of Indonesia’s genocidal policies.
Featuring a preface by Martha Gellhorn, ‘Distant Voices’ also addresses the ‘quiet’ death of the Labour Party and the myth-making of the Gulf War as well as a tribute to Noam Chomsky.
Breaking through the consensual silence, Pilger pays tribute to those dissenting voices we are seldom permitted to hear.
